Did you know… Why Californians are scared they may run out of bacon? In 2018, the state passed a ballot initiative that would prohibit the confinement of calves raised for veal, breeding pigs, and egg-laying hens below a specific number of square feet. While the state has since adjusted to requirements for calves and hens, it is now out of time to adjust for that of pigs, before the deadline of this year’s end. Only 4% of national pig producers comply with the rules. If nothing changes, California will not have a sustainable supply of pork in 2022. This specific animal welfare legislation is the first in the country and will likely set the stage for that of other states.
